2023 Hands-on Summer Camps

Each of these fun, hands-on, experiential and skills-focused camps offer the unique opportunity to explore the joys and fundamentals of boat building.

The Bosuns & Boatbuilders and Sailors & Shipwrights camps are offered in partnership with the Gundalow Company and, as a companion to the Boatshop experience, offer campers the chance to learn principals of seamanship and have some one-the-water fun each afternoon.

Each camp runs 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday. Space is limited in each camp to 12.

Registration for 2023 Summer Camps offered in partnership with the Gundalow Company opens January 9 for Strawbery Banke & Gundalow Company members and January 16 to non-members.

These camps often fill up during the membership registration period, so we STRONGLY recommend you update your memberships (at the $100 or higher level) prior to January 9th.

Memberships come with many benefits in addition to access to the members-only early camp registration and discounts on program fees. Renew or join before January 9th to ensure you'll have access to early registration!

Cast off on a new adventure with the professional boatbuilders at The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke and the crew at the Gundalow Company for a fun-filled week of making new boats while making new friends.  Budding boatbuilders ages 7-9 will join the crew at the Boatshop to discover the wonders of transforming raw materials into a simple cat rigged model sailboat. In this hands-on camp, participants will work to produce their very own boat that we’ll launch and sail on the final day.  Along the way we’ll introduce some basic tool usage, measuring, knots, and examine concepts such as buoyancy and displacement. When we’re not in the shop, we’ll keep the energy high and the learning flowing through cooperative team building games.

After a morning of boat building, campers will head out for some time on the water.  We’ll sail the Gundalow, row our Piscataqua Wherries, paddle small kayaks and explore the rivers and waterfront of the Portsmouth region.  Campers will help the crew set the sail, steer the boat, tie knots, and learn to navigate from the deck of the only Gundalow in the world.

Cost: $500. 10% discount for Strawbery Banke and Gundalow Company members. REGISTER

Campers will join the professional boatbuilders at The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke for an exciting week of building their own wooden model sailboats from scratch. Each camper will discover the fundamentals of boatbuilding and learn how to use basic woodworking skills to experience the magic of transforming a drawing and raw materials into a 3-dimensional model sailing boat. The week will culminate with campers launching and sailing their finished boats before taking them home for future adventures.

Campers will join the crew aboard the Gundalow and learn to navigate and sail this traditional vessel. In addition, campers will have the chance to venture out in wooden wherries and learn to row and explore the hidden spots on our rivers.

Cost: $500. 10% discount for Strawbery Banke and Gundalow Company members REGISTER

Other Youth Programs

The Boatbuilder's Apprentice (ages 12-14)
The Boatbuilders's Apprentice replaces the Captains & Carpenters summer camp that was offered in past years for this age group.
This program is not being offered for Summer 2023

Campers will have the opportunity to spend a full week in the Boatshop at Strawbery Banke where we’ll begin construction on a new numbered MerryMac sailboat under the mentorship and guidance of master boat builder Nate Piper.

The MerryMac, a hard-chined, free standing, marconi rigged catboat, was designed by famed New Hampshire designer/ builder Edward "Ned" McIntosh who produced and estimated 200 MerryMacs between 1953 and the late 1960's. The design and construction of these beloved watercraft have stood the test of time, with many of the original numbered fleet still plying the waters along New Hampshire's seacoast and beyond.

Using the original building molds and patterns along with our own MM250 as the basis for construction, the focus of the week be on introducing and developing skills and familiarity with all aspects of boatbuilding—including reading design plans, understanding boat anatomy, terminology and function, tool usage and woodworking skills.

This camp is ideal for previous Boatshop camp participants that are ready to deepen their woodworking and tool usage skills and who are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the construction of a full size historically significant vessel. However, prior Boatshop camp experience is not a prerequisite for participation.

Please note: there is no expectation that the boat will be completed by the end of camp, but rather will serve as an ongoing teaching tool.
