“Documenting an Historic Piscataqua River Wherry”
July 10-11, 9am-4pm both days
This first session of HANDS ON BOATS will be led by Nate Piper, boat builder and Graham McKay, boat builder and trained marine archaeologist.
“Documenting an Historic Piscataqua River Wherry” will focus on taking the lines off a wherry that is part of Strawbery Banke Museum’s collection. Participants will learn how to identify materials, construction details and practices, and how to take a three-dimensional boat and record it in two dimensions.
The goal of this workshop is to capture the historic details of this original vessel in order to replicate the vessel while also creating an official record of that can become part of the museum’s permanent collection.
Documenting the historic boat is the first step in the process of constructing a replica vessel. The remainder of the 2017 HANDS ON BOATS sessions will focus on the sequential phases of the new boat’s construction. Join us for on these additional sessions:

About Nate Piper
Nate is the owner of Piper Boatworks in Rye, NH and director of The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke. Over the past 20 years, he has been involved with wooden boats of all shapes, sizes and ages. In addition to his current involvement with The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke, he restores and builds new boats in his own shop, including MerryMac sailboats, Nate previously served as the project manager for the construction of the new gundalow Piscataqua. Nate has also worked on the rebuilding of the Boston Tea Party ships in Gloucester, Massachusetts; worked with Harold Burnham on the construction of the Schooner Yacht Isabella in Essex, Massachusetts; and worked on the construction of Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware's Tall Ship. Nate once sailed aboard the HMS Bounty as Crew and ship's carpenter and both sailed as crew and worked on a major refit of Martha Lewis, a Chesapeake Bay skipjack. Nate is a graduate of the Landing School of Boat Building and Design in Kennebunkport, Maine. |
About Graham McKay
Graham McKay is executive director of Lowell’s Boat Shop, the oldest continuously operating boat shop in America. The national landmark is a working museum dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the art and craft of wooden boat building. Over his career he has spent time as a commercial fisherman, professional sailor, fisheries scientist and commercial diver. McKay is a licensed captain and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard and a master’s degree in maritime history and archaeology from the University of Bristol (U.K.). |
